Devastating Insecurity in Northern Nigeria and Its Impact

By Abubakar Adamu Danjuma, Bauchi

The northern region of Nigeria, particularly the North-East, North-West, and parts of the North-Central, are grappling with catastrophic violence, including Boko Haram insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, and gruesome killings. States like Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa have been plagued by insecurity for an extended period.

The Boko Haram insurgency has been ongoing since 2009, with the issue becoming a political football during election campaigns. Unfortunately, the elimination of insurgency and banditry often takes a backseat to self-defense and political interests.

Recently, the resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno State, particularly in Chibok, and the alarming rates of kidnappings and banditry in North-West states like Zamfara and Katsina, as well as parts of the North-Central, including Plateau and Kwara States, have become concerning. The recent attack on Bokkos, Plateau State, where innocent citizens, including minors, were killed, is a stark reminder of the situation's gravity.

The government must prioritize protecting lives and property to restore peace and unity. This would honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes who fought for the country's peace, unity, and development.

Together, we can work towards creating a Nigeria where no one is oppressed.
