Gov. Namadi Flags Off Distribution of Biofortified Seeds To 30,000 Farmers

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has flagged off the distribution of biofortified Iron Pearl Millet and Vitamin A Maize seeds to 30,000 smallholder farmers across the state’s 27 local government areas. This is part of efforts to boost food security and combat malnutrition in the state.
The launch event, held in Dutse, marked the beginning of the 2025 rainy season farming support program aimed at increasing agricultural productivity and improving nutritional outcomes in rural communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Namadi said the initiative was part of his administration’s commitment to empowering farmers with improved inputs that address both food availability and public health challenges.
The biofortified seeds Iron Pearl Millet rich in iron and Vitamin A Maize fortified with essential nutrients are designed to address widespread micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among women and children.
Agricultural experts say iron deficiency is a leading cause of anemia, while vitamin A deficiency is linked to impaired vision and weakened immunity.
The state government, in partnership with HarvestPlus, the Seed distribution Funded by Jesus Christ church of latter-day saints is working to ensure that farmers not only receive the seeds but are also trained in modern farming practices for better yields.
Country Manager Dr. Yusuf Dollar Fuad said HarvestPlus Launched the Initiative with a view to Combat Hidden Hunger in Jigawa State.
According to him, it's aimed at addressing micronutrient malnutrition, also known as "hidden hunger,". Fuad stated that the program, funded by the Latter Days Saints based in the United States, will reach out to 30,000 farmers in 27 local government areas, providing them with vitamin A-enriched maize and iron and zinc-enriched millet.
He said the initiative is part of HarvestPlus's efforts to develop and promote nutrient-enriched crops that can help combat micronutrient deficiencies.
"According to experts, the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for brain and body development, and a lack of essential nutrients during this period can have irreversible consequences" Research said.
The Country director alleged that the program will provide seeds, employ 20 field extension agents, and offer training support to farmers as they plant these nutrient-enriched crops. The seeds are high-yielding, climate-smart, and have high flour yield when milled.
Daily Trust report that the launch event was attended by government officials, royal fathers, and distinguished guests, who praised the initiative and pledged their support for its success.
Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Engineer Auwal Garba Ibrahim said the seedlings is a welcome development to Jigawa Farmers, promised to sensitize the Farmers across the state to make use of it's looking at the importance of them
Farmers present at the launch expressed appreciation for the support and pledged to make the best use of the inputs to improve their livelihoods.
"This type of seed has high yield and does not require early planting, as it only takes 65–70 days to harvest."
The initiative is expected to cover thousands of hectares of farmland and contribute to the broader goal of reducing hunger in the state.
Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s support for smallholder farmers, including access to extension services, mechanization, and improved market opportunities.
