Ukraine has launched a new counteroffensive in Russia's Kursk region, according to the Russian defense ministry. The ministry stated that efforts are ongoing to destroy the Ukrainian attack groups. Ukrainian officials have also confirmed that an operation is underway.
This latest development comes after Ukraine initially launched an incursion into the Kursk region in August last year, capturing a significant chunk of territory. Although Russian forces have made gains in the area in recent months, pushing the Ukrainians back, they have been unable to completely expel them.
The Russian defense ministry reported that the Ukrainian counter-attack involved an assault detachment consisting of two tanks, one counter-obstacle vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles. The attack was launched from the Ukrainians' base at Sudzha towards the villages of Berdin and Bolshoye Soldatskoye.
Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, hinted at the success of the operation, stating that there was "good news from Kursk Region" and that Russia was "getting what it deserves". Meanwhile, counter-disinformation official Andriy Kovalenko noted that the Russians in Kursk were experiencing great anxiety due to the surprise attack from multiple directions.
The impact of this offensive on the frontline remains unclear, with some speculating that it may be a diversionary tactic. Ukrainian forces have been facing manpower shortages and losing ground in eastern Ukraine in recent months.
In a related development, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine overnight, with 61 drones shot down over several regions. Although there were no direct hits, a few houses were damaged in Kharkiv Region by an intercepted drone.
